A new cholesterol-lowering medication that can reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious health problems is available in the U. S. drug market today, as a result of the launch of Nexium (esomeprazole) by Eli Lilly and Company.
Nexium (esomeprazole) is a type of drug that blocks the effects of certain naturally occurring hormones, called HMG-CoA reductase. HMG-CoA reductase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the human body. Studies show that patients taking Nexium may have heart disease.
Nexium, a brand name for a drug known as Prilosec, is a non-steroidal medicine that is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions.
Nexium was approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2000. Prilosec is a brand-name version of the drug Prilosec®, sold under the name Prilosec, manufactured by Prilosec Pharmaceuticals Inc.
The drug comes as a liquid suspension that is taken as a single dose. It is taken once or twice a day for 10 to 20 days, and its effects usually last from 1 to 4 weeks. The medication can be used with other medicines, including those for stomach ulcers, or with other drugs for depression or heart disease.
In clinical trials, patients taking Nexium developed a new condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which is characterized by a persistent and abnormal build-up of fats in the blood. This build-up can lead to heart attacks, strokes, liver damage and other serious health problems.
While the condition is not a long-term side effect, patients should be aware that Nexium can cause serious side effects, including liver damage and heart problems. These serious side effects can be life-threatening and can include:
In some cases, people who are taking Nexium may also develop severe kidney problems, which may lead to kidney failure. People who are also taking other medications for heart disease may also have symptoms of this type of kidney disease.
